Combining my Listen post into a Reflect Post because one thought led to another and another….
As I writer, I tire easily when I find myself writing in the same format over and over again. For example, a feature article or a self-help column feels like I’m just explaining things in a constricting, factual manner.
Some days I wish I could muster up the creative strength to just
break the F*ck Free express and “Let the Words Flow.” I was listening to “Love Rain” by Jill Scott today and I thought, “Dayyyyym, I wish I could put words together like this.”
I wish I could see The Roots live.
Sometimes it’s not just a song that shapes you. It’s an album. (Remember those??) Times have changed. But I do remember buying this CD in a record store during a trip to LA. with money saved from my allowance. Gosh this album changed me. This changed me. Mos Def x Talib Kweli forever. I thank the soul who uploaded the full album online. Pass it on.

Before he was Yasiin Bey, he was Mos Def. He’s of the artists that I can look back on and still appreciate the music he created as if it were released today. Priority (from The Ecstatic) is one of those songs.
